How to Differentiate Between Insulation Bricks and Refractory Bricks?

2024-01-31
I. What Are Insulation Bricks and Refractory Bricks?

Insulation bricks are primarily used for insulation, reducing heat loss, and generally do not come into direct contact with flames. In contrast, refractory bricks are designed to withstand direct exposure to flames.

Refractory bricks are used to endure the heat of flames and are generally divided into two types: unshaped refractory materials and shaped refractory materials. Unshaped refractory materials, also known as castables, consist of a mixture of various aggregates and one or more binding agents in powder form. When used, they must be mixed with one or more liquids to achieve a uniform consistency and possess strong fluidity. Shaped refractory materials are typically used to manufacture refractory bricks, which have standardized shapes or can be temporarily processed according to specific requirements.
2. Main Differences Between Insulation Bricks and Refractory Bricks

Refractory Bricks: These bricks have high mechanical strength, a long service life, good chemical stability, and excellent high-temperature resistance, with a maximum heat resistance temperature of up to 1900°C. They are particularly suitable for applications in high and low-temperature transformation furnaces, conversion furnaces, hydroconversion reactors, desulfurization tanks, and methane furnaces. They play a role in dispersing gas-liquid, supporting, covering, and protecting catalysts. Refractory bricks are also used in the steel industry for hot blast stoves and heating transformation equipment.

Insulation Bricks: These bricks represent a new type of building energy-saving insulation technology primarily composed of inorganic composite materials. They are an ideal technology to replace traditional external wall insulation. Insulation bricks integrate excellent insulation properties into the wall while constructing the wall.

The differences between refractory bricks and insulation bricks are significant, including their usage environment, scope, and functions. Different materials are used in different locations, and when selecting materials, it is advisable to determine the suitable refractory materials based on the specific circumstances of the enterprise.
